background
A major Danish government funded research effort was initiated in 2004. It was motivated by the growing public concern related to the use of mobile phones, especially by children, and the public anxiety concerning 3G base stations. The total budget for the activity was 30 Million Danish kroner (about 4 M Euro), and the projects were chosen after an international review of the applications. The board of the program consists of 4 persons, Philippe Grandjean, Olav Breinbjerg, Kjell Hansson Mild, and Jørn Olsen. Jørgen Bach Andersen has a coordinating role.
The overall goal of the program was to reveal possible health risks –including long term effects- in connection with non-ionizing radiation, with special emphasis on mobile communications and possible risks for children and adolescents. The program is encompassing a wide range of topics over epidemiology, mechanisms, cell biology and human studies. Since the projects are ongoing there are only few publications at the moment.
In the following short descriptions of the funded projects and the state of progress as of September 2007 are given. The information given here will be updated later on the website www.mobil-straaling.dk
